Additionally, he also carried a birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus) that has traditionally been used to inhibit bacterial growth. Medicine? Without his input we cannot be certain however, current members of that species have been sought after for the same reason.
In Japan, traditional/folk medicine has utilized turkey tail (Coriolus versicolor) to boost the immune system and ward off infection. It worked so well that modern medicine has been using them for the last 30 years as one of the species to treat cancer independently or in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiation.
