Two psychedelics with completely different ways of working in our bodies to treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD. How do I know which one is the best option for me? I would be more comfortable if I was with someone when I took it.

Ketamine – On March 5, 2019 the FDA approved the use of esketamine nasal spray for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.¹ Other forms of ketamine include IV and IM injections as well as a liquid for oral administration. Ketamine effects depression/anxiety by influencing the production of BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) resulting in a leveling out within certain parts of the brain.² It takes around 20 minutes to take effect and users report improved mood, and feeling somewhere between slightly intoxicated and dissociated with hallucinatory effects depending on the dosage (clinical vs recreational). Duration is often between 1-3 hours and is also a result of dosage. Ongoing case studies indicate ketamine’s ability to assist with and maintain abstinence during the treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs³).

Psilocybin – On October 23, 2018 COMPASS Pathways received the FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation for psilocybin therapy for treatment-resistant depression⁴. Psilocybin is not offered as a pharmaceutical product in the US, clinical trials remain ongoing. Scientific trials are focused on psilocybin’s effect on depression, anxiety, mood disorders, etc due to its effect on serotonin (the key hormone that stabilizes mood, sense of well being and happiness⁵). Effects begin to be reported 20-40 minutes after ingestion (forms of administration include fresh or dried mushrooms or liquid) and last around 2-4 hours. Depending on the dosage, participants report increased sensory perception, elevated sense of compassion and empathy, and mild visual and auditory hallucinations.

Which one is the best option for me?* I would feel more confident if I was with someone when I took it.
